Tektite 49 grams,Meteorite Impact-Glass, Philippinite, Bicolite:Bicol Province, Philippines
Extremely attractive and highly desirable, this classic biscuit-shaped, text-book example, displays multiple deep contraction grooves around the edges. An outstanding example of a tektite that even shows signs of flight orientation, which occurred during its decent back to Earth. This is the specimen to have !
Tektites, from the Greek tektos, occurs when an asteroid impacts the Earth and causes terrestrial rocks to liquefies as they are splashed into the upper atmosphere, and returns to Earth as solidified glass.
A tektite’s shape is aerodynamically determined by its degree of orientation as it falls back to Earth. As it cools, the molten rock contracts which forms the highly aesthetic contraction grooves which can be seen on the current specimen.
