Description
Up for sale from my collection is anamazing 163.5 grams (817 cts) natural Libyan Desert Glass loaded with noteworthy features.
Every side of this exceptional translucent piece has a different texture and form.
The colors range in sections from a dark green, light and medium yellow-green, milky white to a light brown (presence of a meteorite component).
The colors as seen by the human eye, varies with the angle and degree of light.
There are indentations of various sizes, shapes and depths all around the entire piece. Numerous patches of sand adhere to the surface, along with larger grains imbedded within several crevices. This piece has numerous partial holes, tubes and cavities. All these features, giving it a fluted and polished form and a beautiful sculptural quality, attest to a lengthy desert e
nvirorment
having spent innumerable years on the surface shaped and polished by the blowing sand. Within the glass, a high-temperature mineral, known as cristobalites, are also evident.
However, the most distinctive features are two long complete holes that meet in the middle forming a tunnel system. It appears that these two tunnels were created when air bubbles burst when the glass was just beginning to solidify. This feature really adds a ‘unique’ character to this piece.
BACKGROUND: Libyan Desert Glass is found in only one remote location on Earth – in the Sahara Desert between Libyan and Egypt.
Scholars agree that 29 million years ago one of two events occurred that created this glass - a massive burst of thermal energy associated with a meteorite impact, or a meteorite airburst explosion above the surface of the earth in this area; the former being the more likely theory based on a new study. This tremendous impact was sufficient to melt and fuse the surface desert sand forming the glass.
Libyan Desert Glass possesses the highest silica content of any natural glass known, which required temperatures above 2,900
°
Fahrenheit to form. No other natural glass remotely approaches it in both chemistry and physical character has ever been found.
